Tips for working from home

In short

  • A good posture is essential to prevent physical discomfort while working from home.
  • An ergonomic workspace at home makes all the difference.
  • With a few simple tips, you can work healthier and more productively from home.

Some people love it, others don’t. Working from home. Starting your day at the dining table with a laptop, a cup of coffee, and your homemade breakfast. To help you get through this period in a healthy and productive way, we’ve gathered some tips and tricks to make working from home more enjoyable.

Think about the correct posture

To prevent physical discomfort, it is important to maintain a good posture while working. Essential for a good sitting posture is, of course, an adjustable office chair and the guidelines for setting it up correctly. Here you will find a step-by-step guide to adjust your office chair so that it optimally supports you. Don’t have an office chair at home yet? Consider taking one from the office or purchasing one. A dining chair is a short-term solution but does not provide sufficient support for prolonged use.

Besides a good chair to sit on, it is important to have the right supportive products to help you maintain a good posture. Think of a keyboard, mouse, monitor stand, or laptop stand. Without these products, you will quickly adopt an incorrect posture, which can lead to back and neck issues over time.

Create the right environment

In an office, it is standard that the space where you work is equipped with various facilities such as proper and sufficient lighting, a pleasant indoor climate, and good acoustics. At home, this is not always the case, so keep this in mind. When determining your workspace, consider the following:

1. Light: ensure sufficient natural and artificial light. Try to avoid spots in direct sunlight, no matter how tempting.

2. Air: ensure sufficient ventilation at home. Open a window occasionally to provide your workspace with some fresh air.

3. Temperature: ensure a comfortable temperature at home. The ideal temperature for your workspace is between 20 and 22 degrees.

4. Sound: try to work in a place where you are disturbed as little as possible by (background) noise, or designate a quiet spot at home where you need to focus.

5. Clean desk-policy: Yes, even at home! A tidy workspace equals a tidy mind. Try to leave your workspace as clean as possible—or even put things away—at the end of your day, so you can start fresh the next day.

Develop a daily routine

Long-term working from home can feel new and unfamiliar. Suddenly, you are no longer working at the office but at home, which comes with its own challenges. You have more freedom to set your own pace, and there is no one to monitor you. Working from home therefore requires a different mindset and perhaps even more discipline than working at the office.

An important aspect of working from home is establishing a rhythm that feels comfortable and works well for you. What time do you wake up daily, and what morning routines do you have? When do you take breaks or engage in other activities like lunch, exercise, or meditation? What time do you finish work, and when do you leave your workspace for the next day? Maintaining a rhythm brings structure and peace, helping you enjoy this period more.

Use apps

There are plenty of programs/apps that can help make working from home easier. Useful apps like Slack, Trello, and Zoom may already be familiar to you. We’ve selected 5 apps that you might be less familiar with but that we regularly use and find ideal for working from home:

1. Asana: never forget what you need to do again. Asana is a project management tool where you can easily create, assign, and execute tasks in an organized manner per project or client
.

2. Noisli: this app helps you stay productive and focused. You can choose to play various natural sounds (simultaneously), such as rain, thunder, or crickets, and set a timer for how long you want to work in concentration. This way, you’ll be less distracted, work with full focus for a self-determined period, and can then take a break to reset your focus.

3. Calm (we use the mobile app): take a moment for yourself every so often and build this into your routine. Meditate in the morning, practice breathing techniques during the day, or listen to a story in the evening. Try to take enough moments of rest throughout the day.

4. Seven (iOS/Android): maintaining your body is important and has become somewhat more challenging due to current developments. This simple app ensures you perform a 7-minute workout every day that makes you fitter and stronger. Short, but powerful. Exactly what you need.

5. Houseparty: want to laugh with colleagues instead of just another online meeting? Try Houseparty! With this app, you can video call and play various games. This way, the farewell party can still happen—just remotely.
